With England beginning their Euro 2016 preparations this weekend against Germany, I thought I would share the 23 I would take.
Joe Hart. Fraser Forster. Jack Butland.
Pretty straight forward here.
Nathaniel Clyne. Kyle Walker.
Gary Cahill. Chris Smalling. John Stones. Eric Dier.
Leighton Baines. Danny Rose.
I’ve gone for 2 players for each position approach here because of injuries and yellow cards, I think we will need sufficient cover and expertise in each position. What’s the point of having on left/right back and then having to move someone out of position? Eric Dier will primarily be used as a holding midfield player and is excellent cover for centre half if required.
Dele Alli. Jordan Henderson. James Milner. Danny Drinkwater.
Raheem Sterling. Adam Lallana. Ross Barkley.
With Dier being used as a midfielder, I wouldnt need as many conventional midfield players. Alli, Henderson, Milner and Drinkwater bring energy and a variety of passing styles. Alli is able to play further forward while Milner can be used in other areas too. With Dier sitting deep, these players can help dominate midfield and provide stability.
I’ve only got 3 “Attacking Midfielders” because of the strikers I’ve chosen. These squads need flexibility. Lallana can play wide and centrally, as can Sterling. Barkley is a really clever player.
Wayne Rooney. Harry Kane. Danny Welbeck. Theo Walcott, Daniel Sturridge.
Kane and Sturridge would be my two first choices at centre forward. Kane has had another amazing season at Spurs. Sturridge, if/when fit, is a classy finisher. Welbeck is a great option as a target man and can also play wide. Walcott’s pace would scare defenders silly and is an under-rated finisher in my opinion. Rooney would play the 10 role in midfield but could be used in a pair up front.
